BE United
BE United is an arts, cultural and social entrepreneurial organisation whose mission is to advocate, nurture and celebrate Black people working in the performing arts, screen and cultural sectors in Scotland. Why? We believe our sectors are richer when all people are represented.
Our vision is a world where everyone is inspired, united and enriched through creativity.
Since 2014, we have held 35 events and programmes including AfroKulture Day, Edinburgh Festival Carnival, Edinburgh Fringe Events, Key Creatives, BE United Presents and Creative Partnerships have attracted over 25,000 spectators. Our employability programmes and professional development programmes have supported 11 young people aged 16 – 24 and over 70+ Black creatives across all 16 recognised creative industries in Scotland. We are building pathways into arts employment and in 2023 have supported Edinburgh International Festival & Talbot Rice Gallery with their recruitment, with the intention of promoting greater diversity of people working as staff in the performing arts.
We have supported 50+ Emerging Artists through our music development programme and provided performance opportunities at ‘BE United Presents’, Scotland’s platform for the best Black artists in Scotland.
Our work in the screen sector has seen us cast 500 people for an Amazon Prime original series ‘Anansi Boys’. This work generated over £180,000 of earned income into the Black community. We have recruited trainees for STV & Forge Entertainment. Thereby, contributing to improved career progression.
Our values are:
Equity: to create a more equitable world, society and sectors.
Empowerment: to empower ourselves and others, to be the best that we can be.
Excellence: to go above and beyond in our work. To stand out.
Empowering Black people to be seen, heard and celebrated.
[Regarding Digital: we have very little experience on our board and are looking for someone to bring their wealth of skills, experience and passion to our team]
